Wheel Wobble - Balancing Issues?

ZF - IFS (in red)

Several owners have reported wheel balance issues on the front wheels with the ZF- IFS.  After many inputs from owners on the FCOC Yahoo group, it seems that the recurring balance issues may be caused by a wheel centering issue, i.e. the wheel doesn't always center on the hub when mounted.

Originally, I had said that the ZF-IFS hubs were metric (true) and that the aluminum wheels were SAE (not true)...the original wheels were also Metric. My apologies to FCCC for any mis-information that has been disseminated.  Any wheel centering issues are probably  normal types of problems with large truck wheels & Hubs. Keep reading below for an after market product that will solve this problem.

Most of us have seen the lug nuts on our cars...the nuts are tapered, thus centering the wheel on the hubs as we tighten down the lug nuts...assuming we do it in a cris-cross pattern as recommended by car mfg.  Truck lug nuts are not tapered so other means have to be used to insure the wheel is centered when re-mounting the tire/wheel.

FCCC informs me that the Metric hubs & wheels switched to SAE on June 5, 2006 when the wheel cut went from 56 to 60 degrees.

The differences (wheel vs. hub) are subtle and may not cause a problem. For example, my '04 Evolution FCCC chassis developed a minor 'wobble' at only 1200 miles.  After the RF wheel was removed and checked (no balance was performed because the tire dealer did not have an 11" center adapter hub to fit the Accuride wheels), after remounting the wheel, the problem went away. Last year I had the front tires upgraded from LRG to LRH...the tire dealer mounted the new tires, balanced them off the coach, remounted the wheels with no problem...I got lucky.

Another owner reported - http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/FCOC/message/1041

"I have had a shimmy at 60 to 70 MPH for the last year and I have
spent approx $2000 at several different Truck shops and Tire stores.
Most of them admit that they do not know much about the XC /ZF /IFS
Even many of the F/L dealers say they have not worked on the IFS before."

Several other owners have reported similar problems with equal frustration.

Possible Solution - thanks to owner Steve Hample for the following information. Steve says he has used the external centering lugs for over a year and says they work really well.

Thanks Steve for the heads up...such a simple solution for such a dumb problem.

Owner testimonials -

Here is some actual experience from  FCOC members on the FCOC Yahoo Group.

I have a 2005 Mandalay and have experienced a shimmy from day one. I
took the unit to a Goodyear dealer for correction of the problem when
the unit had 6,000 miles and they replaced the two front tires which
were "out of round". The visit netted two new free tires but no relief
from the problem. Since it was an annoyance and not a critical problem
I decided to live with it.

This year I saw several postings concerning a product called TruBalance.

I was very skeptical about dishing out money for something as simple as a

couple of sets of bolt sleeves to ensure real wheel centering. I decided to try

it anyways because the constant shimmy was bothersome. I went to a truck shop

in Chillicothe MO who deals in that product and had the external sleeves installed

on the front tires. The long and short of it is that the two sets of sleeves and the

labor to install them cost me about $100 and one thousand miles later the problem

has not happened again. Money well spent and I am very satisfied with the results.

I just installed the Tru-Balance external sleeves on my wheels

and “it” will take out all the vibration.
Their web site is www.tru-bal.com <http://www.tru-bal.com/> .

I only wish I had done this at the beginning of the year, my dealer had
removed one of my front wheels and have had a vibration between 55 and 65
ever since.

We now have 18,000 miles on our coach and we are in the planning stages of
another big trip and this time we should be vibration free.

In my discussions with Freightliner, they made me aware of a product that they felt would do away with the problem. The product can be found here:

http://www.tru-bal.com/index.cfm<http://www.tru-bal.com/index.cfm>

If you go to the page found at the link, under "products" they have three solutions shown. While each of them are different, and more than one may fit a given application, we purchased and installed solution "C". The installation seems to have completely taken care of the problem. Personally, I feel well worth the investment.
